How We Measure Your Countertops
Friday, April 6, 2012 at 7:04PM It’s actually quite a complicated process. More delicate than you think. The entire granite / marble installation begins with the measurement. It is where the major design is incorporated and where an 1/8” can be the difference between too tight and too loose. Oh, the pressure! But it is really not all that difficult. It just take patience and some great equipment.
The Pre-Computer Days

Before we moved into the modern era with our equipment, we used to measure all countertops with either a tape and pencil or cardboard. We still use a measuring tape today for simple square tops; it’s just easier and faster. For more complicated pieces with angles and curves we used cardboard. It was also good to visualize what an overhang or unusual shape would look like. There were too many variables though. Cardboard too hours to work with. When folder, it changed the shape. If it got wet (which is common in a marble shop) it would shrink and expand. As you can see, the cons were numerous.
The Now
Today, we love technology.
There have been many measuring devices that have come to market for our industry. We’ve researched them all. For us, the absolute best device is called the Proliner. It’s small. It’s (relatively) light. It has a 16’ radius reach. And, best of all, it’s highly accurate. It takes measurements to the 1/1000th of an inch. It brings a new definition to the meaning of “tight fit.”
The way it works is it has a wire that is connected to a small pen. You pull the pen out and simply touch points around the cabinets, recording them with a remote. There is a gyro inside of the machine that registers exactly how far the pen has been pulled and at what angle. It calculates these variable to get an accurate measurement. Let me tell you: it is accurate.
The next step is to take those measurements and put them into a laptop. Then, on the job site, we check the measurements, add overhangs, and add details. Not only is this speedy, but it allows you to see what your countertops will look like, to scale. Want a bigger overhang? No problem. Want a little curve? Take a look right here. Crazy shape? We love those! The design process is easy and understandable.
At Washington Marble & Granite we believe in utilizing technology to our every advantage. I can’t wait to show you a little more about what we have at the shop.
Disclaimer: We are NOT affiliated with Proliner in any way. We just love the machine.
